VGN-Z17GN/B @ 19,980 HKD (USD 2560)

VGN-FW17GU @ 21,980 HKD (USD 2818)

The Z17 is a freaking dream laptop that is coming out in September, which is a long way away, PLUS you'll need to pre-order just to get a shot at buying it (premium stuff). I don't mind the pre-ordering, but waiting an entire month is going to break a neck.

FW17 has Blu-Ray, a weaker gfx card, weaker mem bus (800MHz VS 1066 MHz), but is out right now, and I can probably trade in my old VGN-TX17GP for it.

Z17: GF 9300M GS (256), USB x2, 1.48 kg (!!), 8.5 hours on batteries (!!!!!!!!!)
FW17: RM HD 3470 (256), Blu-Ray (!), USB x3 (!), 3 kg, 3 hours on batteries

Yes, all my laptops have "17" on them, it's a god damned sign.

PS: It should be FW17 in the poll, not 16...

Z17. You can wait.

And it better not be just for WoW!

Hmm...

Since you won't be needing Penabled features (having a Graphire4 and all), so a Variable-Laptop is out of the question mainly due to distinct price differences.

What exactly are you aiming for this time? Portability? Power? A compromise of both?

(Because Pron is always related, I won't ask if you'll use it for mentioned reason.)

...

One thing I can suggest without a doubt, regardless of which route you take: Get the extra battery (or more as you see fit).

Yeah, I'm a fan of the Z17 as well, but I suck at waiting =(

The main reason why I'm buying it is to play games anywhere there's a socket, of course. You've known me this long and you still need to ask? XD Portability is a giant issue when I'm on flights (which I will be on), which means the Z fits both bills - power AND portability. Besides, I get to shout LAPTOP ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED.

The attractiveness of the F17 lies in the Blu-Ray and the extra USB socket. People have NO idea how incredibly annoying it is to be limited to a mouse and a HDD/iPod at once (USB splitters suck).

Having little idea how you intend to use the new hardware, it was just a matter of logic to ask because of the extra variable that is your main system used at home, of course.

I did not check thoroughly, but does said better energy capacity laptop have a docking bay expansion of some kind for extra slots? Sure, USB Splitters suck but when you're stuck with not-so-power-hungry components...

No, VAIO doesn't make the dock you're used to. The batteries last long enough to make it moot (8.5 hours on stamina mode and 5.5 while playing games? Fuck win!). Besides, nothing a change of batteries can't handle.

"I'm used to"?

If only I know how a plane socket adaptor looks like or where it's located on a typical Economy seat*...

* Someone who works in an airlines verified to me that a less-used power port exists, though I am skeptical about it but not enough to ignore the possibility until I confirm its presence/absence for myself.

I meant you're used to your HUEG laptop's USB around the back (my laptop only has 2 on the left).

And I've seen the power dock on planes before, but they're somewhere near the back. Never got to use them since they were round plugs.

I see.

I thought you assumed I am familiar with those large docks used by the Thinkpad series from before or something to that effect.

Nah. Besides, I don't use "low power" stuff. I mean, I've got HDDs, a Razer mouse and that's about it (and the DS adaptor).

You don't intend on using large HDDs in a plane on a whim... do you.

Ambiguity doesn't help otherwise, but no, I don't think fapping on a plane with a non-handheld electronic device is practical.

That's what books or smaller hardware is for.

That is precisely what I like about Modular Bay Systems; hot-swappable hardware for best functionality.

I don't know about other brands or models, but having used mine for over a year, I can say it's better than you think.

Unless the user handles the hardware recklessly and carelessly.
Besides, if one really wants a laptop that needs to endure all kinds of hazards, there is always the Toughbook for such a task.

If you do have the patience to handle a laptop similar to my N6440 as a portable device, then go for the extra power.

Patience? Wut? I just like the TX17's super batt power and fast nets.

If by TX-17 you mean your current laptop, then no, I am not referring to that.

I have no idea in hell as to whether you want to use a large laptop in a similar fashion to your small one on a semi-regular basis.

Which is why I'm leaning towards the ZEEEEEEEEEEED, since it's the ultimate version of the TX17.

No, it doesn't need the extra docks. It's almost peeeeerfect. Except for the lack of USBs.

Devil VAIO better self-regen.

That's the whole point of "Devil", and USB 'hubs' are capable of crashing some systems (never happened to me, but I have seen people struggle with old IBMs, hah).
